CURRENT EVENTS
Stem-Cell Bill
One of the first things House Democrats will do when they take command of Congress in January is to reintroduce H.R. 810, the same embryonic stem-cell research bill that President Bush vetoed earlier this year, as stated in CitizenLink. House Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said she wants the bill passed in the first 100 hours of business. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. — the next Senate majority leader — has pledged to have the Senate act on the bill before January is over. The bill, originally sponsored by Reps. Dianna DeGette, D-Colo., and Michael Castle, R-Del., is not one that pro-lifers can support. Embryonic stem-cell research always requires the destruction of human life to harvest the cells, and, to date, has produced no cures. Non-controversial adult stem-cells are already being used to treat more than 70 diseases. “What they are hoping to achieve is an expansion of federal funding for embryonic stem-cell research,” said Matthew Eppinette, associate director of the Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity. He said the legislation would end the president's policy that only allows research on already-existing lines of cells. “Currently, federal funding is limited to embryonic stem-cell lines that were derived before Aug. 9, 2001,” Eppinette said. “What they want to do is to be able to fund research with newer lines, so that would mean the destruction of more embryos.”
Violent Video Games Stimulate Teens’ Emotions
A study by the Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine showed that teen brains react differently to violent versus nonviolent video games, as reported in CitizenLink. Results were announced at a recent meeting of the Radiological Society of North America. The study involved 44 adolescents who were asked to play either a game involving violence or a non-violent game. Immediately following play, magnetic resonance imaging was used to measure brain function. Those who played violent games exhibited more brain activity in a region thought to be important for emotions and less activity in a region associated with executive functions, such as the ability to plan, shift, control, and direct one's thoughts and behavior. Dr. Vincent Mathews, a principal investigator and a professor of radiology at the IU School of Medicine, said the nature of the game being played had a significant effect. “Our study indicates that playing a certain type of violent video game may have different short-term effects on brain function,” he said, “than playing an exciting but nonviolent game.” Further study to better understand the duration and meaning of the relationship between media-violence exposure and brain function are planned.
U.S. Supreme Court Turns Away School-Voucher Case
The U.S. Supreme Court's refusal to hear a school-voucher case out of Maine leaves a confusing patchwork of laws around the country. Eight families from rural communities without high schools sought to use vouchers to send their kids to religious schools, but a state court ruled that case an impermissible mixing of church and state. All the children involved in the suit have since graduated. Their attorney, Dick Komer of the Institute for Justice, called the high court's refusal the “end of the road.” “This was their final shot,” he told Family News in Focus. “As long as parents are making free and independent choices, they should be entitled to select whatever school they prefer.” Legal experts warn against reading too much into a denial from the high court, but Bruce Hausknecht, judicial analyst for Focus on the Family Action, said the decision leaves the country split on vouchers and religious schools. “Every state statute is different,” he said, “so every result comes out a little bit differently.” Five states offer school vouchers — Wisconsin, Arizona, and Ohio allow them to be used for religious schools; Maine and Vermont do not. The provision in Arizona is being challenged.
