A Letter to My Young Readers

2 minuten leestijd

It is quite easy to sit behind my computer and write to you; I do not have to be afraid of your reactions to what I write. The Banner of Truth will not arrive in your home until several weeks after I write this, and when you read it, I will not be there. What your reaction will be to what I have written is not important, or is it? Of course it is.

When you write, it is with a purpose. You think about the person who is to receive your “letter.” How will it be received? You may wonder why you have to think about that. I will tell you why. With e-mails and text messages, divisions are created. A young girl cries as she receives an e-mail. The few sentences which are written there are meant to hurt her feelings. Another girl becomes aware that she is slandered in a chat room. The slanderer does not consider how much damage he or she causes with the comments which are made. Another child receives a message that he or she is not welcome at a birthday party; she might have been invited in a conversation but not invited via a text message.

The problem exists in the speed at which messages are sent; everything goes so fast. With blinding speed we press the keys of our computer and send the message. Thinking about what we have sent may come to mind later, or perhaps, not at all. It is easy to write when the other person is not present. There are three things to remember:

1. Some things should not be discussed via e-mail or text messages.

2. What you write digitally, you should also be able to say in a face-to-face conversation.

3. The Lord knows what your intentions are.

Think about it. Do you consider the welfare of your neighbor?
