New Titles from Bible Truth Books

The Pilgrim’s Progress—A Brief Introduction by Rev. P. Blok—A small, tastefully illustrated summary of The Pilgrim’s Progress. This small book is comprised of 57 brief summaries about various sections of The Pilgrim’s Progress, each with a color illustration and two Scripture references. As such, it could also serve as a book of daily readings. Hardcover, 121 pages, $9.50.

Place Prepared in the Wilderness by A. Stoutjesdyk—Several years ago, the Synodical Education Committee asked Mr. Adrian Stoutjesdyk to write a textbook for high school students on North American church history. This work was finished in 2016, but all copies from the first printing were quickly sold. The book has now been reprinted and is available for purchase. Starting in the 1600’s and continuing until 2000, it explains how Christianity reached our shores, about missionary efforts among the Indians, and about the Great Awakening. It tells of the first waves of Dutch immigrants in the 1800’s and helps students understand both how and why our congregations were formed. Hardcover, 315 pages, $21.40.

The Canon of the Books of the Old and New Testaments Proven to Be Inspired by Robert Haldane—First published in 1830, this book is a detailed yet plain defense of the divine origin of both the Old and New Testaments. Haldane draws extensively from the early church fathers in the first centuries A.D., providing a glimpse of the truths which they believed. At the same time, he also shows that the Apocryphal books are neither inspired nor trustworthy. Hardcover, 192 pages, $15.60.

From the Upper Room by Rev. P. Blok— Throughout his more than 40 years as a minister, Rev. P. Blok has experienced many things. In this book, which is meditative in nature, you will find reflections and memories regarding the encounters with old pilgrims and their wisdom. They tell of the ways of the King in His Holiness and, at times, of God’s work in children. The thoughts in the upper room also go back to the past—to the moments with the Lord and the times when He opened His Word. Then the Fountain was often full of waters which both strengthened and renewed. Heartily recommended. Hardcover, 117 pages, $6.10.

The prices shown do not include postage.

The New Testament for Israel

The New Testament in Hebrew is primarily produced for the Hebrew people in Israel whose mother tongue is Hebrew. The Old Testament was originally written in the eminent and august language of Hebrew. However, the writers of the New Testament, such as the evangelists and the apostles, used the Greek language. We do not have the original manuscripts of their books and epistles anymore. They simply have perished. What we have are copies of their texts.

Now there are many of those copies. Throughout the centuries people have copied the text of the books of the Bible. This was mainly done in the monasteries. Altogether there are more than 5,000 manuscripts of the books of the Bible or parts of the Bible. There are no other documents of ancient times of which there are that many copies. We may see God’s hand here: He has preserved His most precious Word throughout the ages. This is a wonder of God’s providence.

There are quite a few differences between the various manuscripts. In many cases these differences are minor, but some may also produce major discrepancies pertaining to the deity of Christ or other fundamental doctrines. Sometimes words or sentences are omitted or, in other cases, words and sentences are added. The main issue here is: Which is the correct and most reliable manuscript or text produced from the manuscripts? Every serious translator, in whatever language, will have to deal with this issue. What is the origin of the basic text open in front of me? Upon which manuscripts is this text based, and are these the best manuscripts? This is crucial even before one word is translated. It is of great importance that the translator has a reliable and trustworthy text.

The translators of the Dutch Statenvertaling and the English Authorized (King James) Version used the group of manuscripts known as the Textus Receptus (the received text) as their basic Greek text. This text was considered authoritative in the church for many centuries. It was not until the late 1800s that people started to doubt its superiority when newly discovered Greek manuscripts of the New Testament led some to criticize the Textus Receptus. Scholars noted many variants in these recently accessible manuscripts which deviated from the received text and tried to make a reconstruction of what they believed to be the original text. This was just impossible, but now the majority of modern translations of the Bible are based on their “Critical Greek Text.”

What if someone in Israel today wants to read the New Testament in the modern Hebrew language? There is a modern version available based upon the Critical Text. There is also a translation made by Dr. Franz Delitzsch, a Lutheran scholar, dating back to 1877. His monumental work was originally produced from the Critical Greek Text; later, he essentially conformed it to the Textus Receptus. However, he did not use the modern Hebrew language which was developed by Eliezer Ben Yehuda but instead used the old biblical Hebrew. There are many similarities between old and new Hebrew but also big differences. Some of the old words found in the Hebrew of the Old Testament have a totally different meaning today. For example, the old Hebrew word for mediator now means pimp or a brothel keeper. You can imagine this can lead to problematic misunderstandings. Another major difference was the quotation of the texts from the Old Testament. Delitzsch did not just translate the Greek text but, instead, just copied the Hebrew text from the Old Testament, which sometimes did not exactly match the Greek of the New Testament. Later, Delitzsch’s work was partially corrected, but often words were just taken out and other words added rather than the text being fully revised.

There are two main objections against the Delitzsch translation. First is the reliability. As mentioned above, it was not originally based upon the Textus Receptus. Another objection is the lack of clear readability of the text. For the many immigrants in Israel who are wrestling with the Hebrew language, the Delitzsch translation is too difficult to understand.

One organization that has faced these objections is the Trinitarian Bible Society, which is closely related to the Gereformeerde Bijbel Stichting (GBS) in the Netherlands. In the year 2009, a revision project was started, led by Rev. J. Goldby, minister of the Free Presbyterian Church from Scotland and leader of the translation team, to produce a more accurate, up-to-date edition of the Hebrew New Testament.

For the Hebrew project, an organization in Finland proved very helpful, but it had to withdraw its financial support at that time, and the Trinitarian Bible Society could no longer sustain the project. Therefore, they joined hands with the GBS, the Board for Israel, and the Stichting Isaac da Costa Fonds to take the project forward. (More information can be found online at www.nieuwetestamentinhethebreeuws.nl.)

A question could arise: Is this really necessary? The people of Israel today have access to the New Testament, so why another translation? However, the important question is: Do these people have a reliable translation, without the many omissions and changes found in the Critical Text?

This project seeks to help TBS in Israel by contributing to the producing of a revision of the Delitzsch New Testament which is understandable for all. A translation team of experts is already working on it. Therefore, we should fully support this project out of love for the Jewish people inside and outside Israel. It was the Hebrew people of Israel who originally gave the New Testament to the Gentile world. Now we can give it back to Israel with the prayer that it may please the Lord to take away the veil that is still on their hearts when reading Moses, the veil which God is able to take away (2 Corinthians 3:16) as He speaks through His Word. It is our prayer that the Jewish people may come to a saving knowledge of Christ and His preciousness.

Besides your prayers, we also need financial support. Therefore, we are extremely thankful for your free gifts and donations. They are very welcome and helpful! You can deposit your money into the account in Holland NL70 RABO 0321 7073 46 GBS Leerdam– The Netherlands marked for the Delitzsch project.
