Power
Dear Boys and Girls,
A mountain lion lurked behind a rock. Her eyes narrowed, and her long whiskers quivered. She smelled something. She saw something. A small, defenseless bear cub was frolicking near the river. The lioness’s stomach rumbled. She had been unable to find a good meal in several days. Was the mother bear anywhere in sight? The lioness’s large yellow eyes narrowed to slits, and she began to pant with eagerness. Stealthily, she slunk towards her prey. The roly-poly cub did not notice. The lioness was almost upon him when he heard the rustle of the bushes moving behind him.
With a terrified squeak, the bear cub jumped onto a fallen log that lay partly over the rushing water. With a snarl, the lion leaped after him, and the cub ran onto the very end of the log. It was no use. The lion followed, her head lowered, her mouth watering. With a yelp, the cub crashed down into the swirling river, clawed his way onto a floating log, and balanced precariously as it continued to float downstream with the current. The lioness saw her chance and stood waiting for the log to reach the shore. It was almost there, and the cub had no chance of escape.
The lioness licked her lips, but suddenly the hair rose on her back. The deepest, most ferocious growl she had ever heard sounded behind her, and she whirled to face it. It was mama bear. Her huge shoulders bulged, her teeth gleamed as she snapped her jaws together warningly, and the loud rumble continued to emit from the depths of her throat as she ambled closer on her wide paws. With an ominous growl that erupted into a roar, she rose on her hind legs. Her eyes glittered with fury, and she waved her front paws with its gleaming claws back and forth. The lioness began to back away, but the mama bear was not satisfied. Dropping on all fours again, she leaped towards her cub’s attacker and lunged.
For a moment, the ground seemed to tremble. There was such a clicking of teeth, gurgling of anger, slapping of paws, and panting of excitement and fear, such a blur of a tan body and brown fur, that it was a few moments before a beaten lioness emerged from the tangle and set off at a run away from the river. A moment later, the fierce mother bear was licking her cub’s nose and face over and over, comforting and assuring him that all was well. All was safe, and the dangerous lion was gone.
The mother bear made a great display of her power, and she was full of wrath against the animal that dared to attack and threaten her little one. In Psalm 18, we also read of a display of power. We read that David was in great distress. Enemies were surrounding him. They threatened like a great flood of ungodly men, making him afraid. In his distress, He called to His God to save him. He cried out for help, and then it says, “He heard my voice out of His temple, and my cry came before Him, even into His ears. Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken, because He was wroth.”
Was the Lord angry with David? Oh, no. David was His child, and the Lord became very angry with the enemies that were attacking David. It says that He bowed the heavens and came down, flying upon the wings of the wind. He came speedily to David’s aid, and He thundered with His voice. The psalm speaks of smoke, fire, and darkness. How great was God’s anger against those that threatened His child. With what power did He come to save.
David had nothing more to fear. The Lord would care for him. He was His child, and the Lord will always hear His children when they are in distress. Much more than a mother bear protecting her cub, He will arise and deliver those that are His. With much greater power than any power seen in nature, He protects His children and hears them when they cry.
God’s children are often defenseless against the devil when he whispers lies in their heart or provokes others against them. David writes, “For they were too strong for me.” He fled to the Lord in his trouble, and the Lord showed that He was much more powerful than the strongest enemy. The devil can never win and conquer God’s people completely even though they are often overcome and fall into sin; the Bible says, “The gates of hell shall not prevail against them.” The Lord Jesus won the battle when He died for them, and He will finish that work in their heart.
“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth.”
— Matthew 28:18
