Dit boek bevat de lezingen en de notulen van een conferentie van evangelicals uit Noord-en Zuid-Amerika over de contexlualiteit van het Evangelie. Het gaat daarbij om de vraag of de situatie waarin mensen zich bevinden ook inhoudelijk de prediking van het Woord van God beïnvloedt. Als appendix is een artikel opgenomen van Orlando E. Costas, getiteld 'Evangelical Theology in the Two Thirds World'. Het geeft een goede inleiding op de in Tlayacapan gevoerde discussies. Behalve deze conferentie met alleen maar deelnemers uit de beide Amerika's hebben evangelicals uit heel de wereld over het probleem van de contextualiteit vergaderingen gehouden in Thailand (1982), Korea (ook in 1982) en Mexico (1984). In The Seoul Declaration: Toward an Evangelical Theology for the Third World wordt betoogd dat 'a biblical foundation for theology presupposes the church as a hermeneutical community, the witness of the Holy Spirit as the key to the comprehension of the Word of God, and contextualization as the New Testament pattern for transposing the Gospel into different historical situations. We affirm that theology as a purely academic discipline is something we must neither pursue nor import. To be biblical, Evangelical theology must depend on sound exegesis, seek to edify the body of Christ, and motivate it for mission. Biblical theology has to be actualized in the servanthood of worshipping and witnessing community called to make the Word of God live in our situations' (318). In Seoul wordt de Westerse theologie verweten dat ze zich zo heeft geconcentreerd op de vragen rondom het thema geloof en rede, dat zij de armen uit het oog heeft verloren (318).

Ook onder de evangelicals tekenen zich duidelijk verschillende stromingen af. Alleen al wat de Verenigde Staten betreft noemt G. Fackre vijf typen: Fundamentalists, Old Evangelicals, New Evangelicals, Justice and Peace Evangelicals en Charismatic Evangelicals (3! 3).

De conferentie van Tlayacapan kwam niet tot een gemeenschappelijke verklaring. De tegenstellingen waren te groot. De verslagen geven het boek een levendig karakter. Een voorbeeld tot slot. In de discussie over het thema Theology in the Contexts of Marpnalization zegt J. Deotis Roberts: 'This raises the issue of the theological dichotomizing that separates evangelism and social activism. As a black community, we mediate between the two. Too often people believe you must be against something before you can be for something. We are for both. I feel at home in an evangelical situation like this and I feel at home among liberation theologians - and I'm not a split person. I see both dimensions in the gospel. This black tradition is a significant part of the American tradition on these matters' (292).
