“Barbaric” Minnesota Abortion Bill

The Minnesota Senate passed abortion legislation that opponents call the “most extreme” in the nation. A senator emphasized, “Future generations will look back in horror.” The Protect Reproductive Options (PRO) Act passed after Republicans had unsuccessfully tried to amend the bill 35 times to make it more moderate. The bill states that “every individual has a fundamental right to make autonomous decisions about the individual’s own reproductive health.” It allows for abortions for any reason through all nine months of pregnancy. It also strips away parental rights over minors; it not only allows abortions for minors, but it also allows for minors’ sterilization without parental consent or notification.

Turkish Government Banning Christian Workers

Turkish authorities continue issuing “N-82” codes to foreign Protestant Christian workers in Turkey, deporting workers or banning them from entering the country. International Christian Concern is responding to assist with legal challenges and has been somewhat successful. Since 2019 sixty-eight foreign Protestants received the N-82. Foreign Protestant church leaders are important for the 186 Protestant fellowships in the country, especially in the absence of theological training which is also denied in the Turkish National Education System. In the latest legal challenge it is hoped that new precedent will be won to prevent future N-82 codes from being applied.

Christians Killed in Sudan

A pastor and three other Christians while traveling in Sudan as part of a ministry team were shot dead in January by suspected Islamic extremists. Four of their traveling companions were wounded in the attack. Gunmen opened fire on the ministry team between 3 A.M. and 4 A.M at the facility where they were staying. A church leader said the Christians were spending the night en route back to their homes when the attackers shot them. The church leader said that Islamic extremists, who have been terrorizing people in the area since 2011, monitor movements in and out of town and likely saw the ministry team arrive for the night. Sudanese Christians have expressed shock and sympathy for the victims’ families.

Christians Rally Relief After Earthquake

As death tolls climb and with churches of all denominations destroyed, local believers race to the frontlines of emergency response. Christians in Turkey and Syria were among the first responders to the massive earthquake in their countries that left more than 20,000 people dead (and increasing), and tens of thousands injured. The Protestant congregations throughout Turkey quickly gathered blankets, medicines, baby formula, and diapers to send to the afflicted areas and continue their efforts to provide relief. According to officials, more than 5,000 buildings have been destroyed by the 7.8 magnitude quake. More than 13,000 search and rescue personnel have been deployed. Almost 8,000 people have been rescued so far, including a Christian pastor and his wife who spent half a day freezing under the rubble until neighbors succeeded in pulling them out.
