In Memorium

With sadness the consistory of the Netherlands Reformed Congregation of Lethbridge and school board of Calvin Christian School received notice of the passing away of former elder

W. van den Broek

who passed away in Zeist, the Netherlands, at the age of 73 years. From January 1978 to March 1985, he, with the help of the Lord, faithfully served the congregation with the talents entrusted to him. During most of this time he also served as president of the school board of Calvin Christian School. We retain in memory his manifold labours in both positions.

May the Lord remember his wife, children and grandchildren in their great loss.

On behalf of the consistory,

Rev. C. Sonnevelt, president

J. Kreft, clerk

On behalf of the school board,

J. Van den Broek, president

Polygamy Next Threat to Marriage?

While battling on the same-sex marriage front, pro-family groups also have to worry about another potential threat to the institution of marriage: lawsuits attempting to legalize polygamy, according to a report in AFA Journal. There have been numerous challenges to the ban on polygamy, most notably in the state of Utah, where Mormons, many of whom practiced polygamy in the 1800s as part of their religious faith, were especially strong. In 1878 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that laws banning polygamy are constitutional. According to the Desert News, the ban has drawn a number of more recent challenges—all thus far unsuccessful. However, in a development that disturbs pro-family groups, some recent challenges raise a new argument that may shake things up. Three plaintiffs in a recent case are arguing that the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Lawrence v. Texas in 2003 actually opens the door for the legalization of polygamy. In Lawrence, the high court struck down all state sodomy laws, stating that the government had no right to interfere in private sexual matters. Another challenge to Utah's polygamy ban has been heard by the Utah Supreme Court. Press reports indicated at least some sympathy among the justices to the argument that Lawrence might change the way polygamy should be viewed.

Stem-Cell Funding

A congressional push to expand federal funding of embryonic stem-cell research is expected during the next few months. The current policy, established by President Bush in 2001, only allows federal funding of research that involves stem-cell lines created prior to the Bush administration. The new Legislation seeks to fund experiments involving stem cells harvested from embryos created during fertility treatments. It would not allow the use of taxpayer money for research on embryos created for profit or for cloning research. But family advocates still have concerns over the proposal, saying that the destruction of human life in the name of science is immoral and unethical. “The Castle-DeGette bill would require the destruction of the tiniest human beings for the purpose of research—research that shows very little promise,” said Amanda Banks, federal issues analyst for Focus on the Family. “Adult stem-cell research, on the other hand, continues to treat a host of conditions , including breast cancer, Parkinson's disease, and spinal cord injuries.”

In Memoriam

Mrs. Truus Romeyn (1919-2005)

In the early morning of March 16, the widow of the late Rev. M. Romeyn passed away at the age of almost 86 years. The Romeyn family immigrated to Canada in 1949 with two children and were accompanied by Mrs. Romeyn's father, Peter van Gogh, and sister, Marie van Gogh. Seven children were born in Canada. Later her husband became the first minister of the new congregation of Chilliwack, and she faithfully and with much love served beside her husband. Mrs. Romeyn lost her beloved father in 1970. In December of the following year she lost her husband, who had been diagnosed with cancer, and she was left behind with eight children still at home. Her sister Marie passed away in 1997.

The deceased, who was a widow for 34 years, was not only a beloved mother with a fine character, but one who had come to know herself as an ungodly sinner. Often she spoke of her unworthiness to be saved. She also gave testimony of the grace of God through the Lord Jesus Christ. For the last five years she lived in the Ebenezer home, to which she readily adjusted. She did not wish to be a burden to anyone, and none of her friends and family ever heard her complain. She often spoke of the longsuffering and goodness of God for such an unworthy one. An important word from the Bible for her was Isaiah 43:1, “Fear not, for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name, thou art Mine.” At the funeral we meditated upon this same text.

A dear mother, grandmother, and friend has been taken away. What a comfort that she could give testimony of the grace of God, of which we may believe she was not a stranger. May the Lord richly work in the generations following.

— Rev. P. van Ruitenburg
