Mientje Vrijdag was an established Christian who was born and lived in Rijssen, the Netherlands. She spoke often of her God-fearing mother and grandmother, and she herself was converted at a young age. She was deeply led and had a close life with her God. Her husband, who also was one who feared the Lord, was taken from her soon after they were married. Her only son was born after her husband died. During her life she had a rich correspondence with many of her God-fearing friends. What follows is a translation of one of those letters written about her last Lord’s Supper here below. On July 27, 1943, she died, forever to be with her God.

Rijssen, March 2, 1943

Beloved in the Lord,

With the help of the Lord I wish to write you a few lines. Your letter served to the strengthening of my faith. It is becoming very fearful upon the earth. Many young men have been taken away to foreign places. The misery on account of the war is great. I think continually on what the Lord taught me years ago regarding the judgments to come. Oh, how it has and is being fulfilled. That there would yet come a repentance and penance as was seen with Ezra and Nehemiah. Yet during all of these anxious times, it is in my soul, “They all shall sing in joyful lays, and laud His ways with jubilation;” etc.

There, at that place is rest in God, both now and for eternity. When they go through the valley of Baca, He filleth the pools, etc. Yea, in whose heart are the ways of them. It is all from Him and through Him. In Him is the glory unto eternity. The Lord rides through the deserts. Continually He relieves me of my burdens. He enables me to give everything over into the hand of the Lord, yea, into the hands of my Almighty God and Father. He is great in wisdom and wonderful in His deeds. Rejoice, ye righteous, in your lot. This keeps their head aloft.

Sunday morning I awakened with an eye upon the Lord’s Supper. “With My own chosen one, e’en David,” God affirmed, “I’ve made a covenant, with sacred oath confirmed.” There all the bands were broken and in adoration I met with a Triune God. I was brought into the Council of Peace, and He communed with me of all that had transpired between the Lord and my soul. There I again met that interceding Mediator. Oh, I cried out, Rabboni, dear Master. Such was the peace in my soul. I was led into the last chapter of the Song of Solomon and so to church.

“With desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you.” With these words the Lord addressed me at the table. Dieka sat next to me weeping. What a communion, together with His servant and people. My brother also experienced such a blessed communion—fruit from that dear Head of the Church. So the Lord surprised me with a visit. Shall this be the last Lord’s Supper here upon earth before we may drink anew of this wine in the kingdom above? Thus the Lord has dealt with me. He is the God of Jacob’s seed as their Surety and Refuge.

May the Lord be your Shield and your great reward. Be commended to the Most High by your unworthy fellow sigher,

Mientje Vrijdag

If thou be a stranger to regeneration and faith, a person that makes a powerless profession of Christ, that has a name to live but art dead—here it is possible thou mayest meet with something that will convince thee how dangerous a thing it is to be an old creature in the new creatures dress and habit and what it is that blinds thy judgment and is likeliest to prove thy ruin—a seasonable and full conviction whereof will be the greatest mercy that can befall thee in this world if thereby at last God may help thee to put on Christ as well as the name of Christ.
