David’s Prayer—Standing upon the Threshold of a New Year
“Hold up my goings in Thy paths, that my footsteps slip not” (Psalm 17:5).
We, The Banner of Truth committee, wish for you, our readers, the Lord’s indispensable blessing upon the newly begun year. When we look back at a year gone by, then there is no doubt that the Coronavirus has dominated much of the year for all of us. If we observe that which we take for granted as if we have a right to it—our going to church, being together round about God’s Holy Word, or our children going to school, receiving a Christian education—how soon all can be taken away from us. These difficult times should teach us the great, God-given privilege that we and our children may have, meaning, the Word of the Lord, the callings, “prepare thy house for thou shalt die.” This should fill our heart with a humble acknowledging that the Lord, in spite of our backslidings, continues to preserve His Truth for us in our congregations and in our schools. Then, in spite of all the trials in a year gone by, we may say—how great is the goodness and faithfulness of the Lord. May that humble our heart and be our prayer, “Lord, prepare us to meet Thee in righteousness.”
We, as the Banner committee announce with sadness that our managing editor, Dr. Edward Nieuwenhuis, has been forced to lay down his position because of health reasons. For fifteen years he has been the main motivation in preparing The Banner of Truth, making sure that each month it had a place in the homes of our people. He would be the first to say, only with the help of the Lord; my shortcomings were there daily. We wish to thank you, Dr. Nieuwenhuis, and may the Lord give you and your wife to experience the nearness of a faithful God in the years to come.
May the Lord also remember our new assistant managing editor, Mr. James Okken, as he adjusts to the transition of this new task. To help James in preparing our monthly periodical, The Banner of Truth, there is an entire Banner committee who edit the articles and prepare the issue. We thank you, as well. May all of us say, “Lord, hold up our going in Thy paths that, indeed, the path opened in the blood of the Saviour may be our path.” It will not always be easy, but those who may travel that path are always upheld by a faithful, covenant-keeping God. Then, when their journey ends, they may come to that place where they will never slip again.
Dear readers, may our Banner continue to have a place in your home and heart, and may you experience the Lord’s spiritual blessings. This is my wish and prayer for each of us.
