Installation of Rev. P.L. Bazen

Congregation of Rock Valley, Iowa

Wednesday, October 24, 2007, was a joyful day for the congregation of Rock Valley when, after being vacant for only five months, they were again able to receive the living Word; Rev. P.L. Bazen was installed in their midst by moderator Rev. E.C. Adams. Rev. Adams opened the service by remembering in prayer the congregation and Rev. Bazen in the deep ways through which he had to pass with recent surgery and recuperation prior to coming here. For the occasion Rev. Adams chose Acts 20:28 as his text, “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which He has purchased with His own blood.” Rev. Adams took as his theme, “An important word to the overseers of the church of Christ” and named the following four points:

1. The purchased church
2. The indispensable Spirit
3. The heedful overseer
4. The diversified flock

“In 1 Corinthians 16:9, the Apostle Paul speaks of an effectual door being opened unto him. What a blessing, congregation, if that may also be so among you. When that happens, it will be seen in the congregation, for God’s work will not and can not remain hidden.”

In his first thought, Rev. Adams noted that the elected Church was promised unto Christ by the Father in the Council of Peace in the never-begun eternity. In Psalm 40 we read, “Lo, I come to do Thy will, O my God,” and in the fullness of time, Christ came to purchase that Church. That Church, because of its deep fall in Adam, and also because of actual sins, lay under the wrath of a just God. Now the wonder, in spite of the devil and his cohorts trying for more than 6,000 years to destroy it, is that there is still a Church today, and it shall continue until Christ shall come upon the clouds of heaven. He has purchased that Church,” not with corruptible things, but with the price of His blood, of a Lamb without blemish.” What an awesome responsibility it is for office bearers to be overseers of that purchased Church.

In the second place, it is encouraging that it is not their church, but His Church. That purchased Church must be conquered because they lie under the dominion of the devil and under sin. Now Christ sends forth His Word and Spirit, and by that Spirit the Lord gathers his Church. Over that church, He sent certain people as overseers. Are they better than others? Not at all, for often they will tell you that the Lord has chosen the most incapable ones. Why has He chosen them? “Even so Father, so it seemed good in Thy sight.” He chooses them through His sovereignty by quickening them, by converting them, and at His time binds an office upon their hearts. Then they learn how incapable they are, and that is why they must be made capable by the work of the Holy Spirit. The Lord binds the welfare of poor, never-dying sinners upon their hearts and fills their hearts with the love of Christ. At His time He sends them, frequently through the furnace of instruction because they must experience that which they must speak of to others. The more that they may taste of those things of the Lord, the more their hearts are filled with the love of Christ.

In the third place, Paul states that the overseers not only must take good care of the flock but also they must take good care of themselves. We must be busy with the searching of God’s Word, and in prayer, for there the Lord will frequently give instruction which will be useful for the congregation. The more that the overseers are instructed by God about their own souls, they come to the realization that they need everything from Him. There they are instructed by God about His precious offices as Prophet, Priest, and King, and they can serve as good overseers in the church. The Lord did not send angels into His vineyard but sinful men. It is our hope that they may be found much in their inner chambers praying to God unceasingly.

In the fourth place, “To feed the Church of God which He has purchased with his blood.” The flock of the church is made up of people, but they fall into two groups—converted and unconverted. This means there must be a portion for both, and the separation must be made in the preaching. May sinners be uncovered in their sinfulness and be guided and instructed. The Church of God refers to the true Church, the purchased Church. May they be further instructed in the way, and may those among them who “have no name” be fed with manna from above and drink from that fountain of life. May it be declared that the justice of God must be satisfied and that the price must be paid. The working of the Holy Spirit is necessary to give faith to believe in that only Name given under heaven, for there lie the comfort, peace, and the Surety for the living Church.

“May this be given to this flock, may your overseer be given much of the Holy Spirit to fill his heart with the love of a Triune God, and may the souls of the congregation be bound upon his heart. It is the cause of the Exalted King of His Church, and he will gather them until the end of time. Young and old, shall we be among them?”

The form for installation of ministers was then read, and Rev. Bazen answered the questions with, “Yes, truly, with all my heart.”

Rev. Adams spoke of the solemnity of the moment and the insufficiency of man, emphasizing that we may look upon the eternal King of the Church, the great Shepherd, as we find in Psalm 123:2, “Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until that He have mercy upon us.” Addressing Rev. Bazen, he said, “May the Lord grant you a rich measure of His Spirit, may the souls of the flock be bound upon your heart, and may you labor shoulder to shoulder with your consistory.”

Rev. Adams spoke a few final words to the consistory and congregation, noting that there will be many firsts such as Lord’s Supper, Baptism, and the first funeral—and who will that be? He also spoke a welcoming word to Mrs. Bazen and the Bazen family before ending this impressive service with the benediction.
