O Timothy keep that which is committed to thy trust. I Timothy 6:20

A GODFEARING FATHER — PRIVILEGED CHILDREN

Job 1:5

There was a man in the land of Uz. His name was Job. This is written for us in God’s Word. It is thus a testimony of the Lord’s own work. This is the greatest wonder of grace when the Lord gives testimony of His own work as it is worked and glorified in Christ by the Holy Spirit. In practice this keeps the church the lowest and exalts God the highest. Job’s name is mentioned here, because his name is written in the book of life.

We must certainly not think that godfearing parents like Job do not have sinful children. Many times, to their sorrow, they must see the sins of their youth become manifest in their children. Therefore we read that Job rose early in the morning and offered burnt offerings for each of his children; for Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” This means that they may in their feasting have given little heed to God’s commandments or had cast them to the wind.

A God-fearing father with the love of God in his heart and love for his children will, in the practical exercise of it, feel that the glory of God and the salvation of his children weight heaviest.

Boys and girls, may the Lord give you a father as Job’s children had, who do as is written in verse 5; “Thus did Job continually.” By grace Job had learned to know a praying High Priest, a High Priest who testified to him, “I have prayed for thee that thy faith fail not.” Therefore Job carried his children on the wings of prayer. His offering pointed to the perfect offering, the Lord Jesus Christ, Who ever lives on the right hand of His Father, to pray for His people so that His people may receive an entrance in and through Him. They may leave all their needs, also of their children, over unto the Lord with that prayer, “Atone the heavy guilt which fills us with fear; and grant grace unto us and our children,” so that a seed would serve Him to the benefit of church and state.

Boys and girls, the psalmist arouses us to a service of love which never disappoints. The service of the world, no matter how attractive, no matter how sweet for a moment, leaves a bitter after-taste, and in due time an eternal destruction.

May the God of Job, through grace, give us praying fathers and mothers. In these troublesome times may the Lord bestow upon our youth the desire to break with the world. May the choice of Moses and Ruth be your portion and may the God of all grace according to His good pleasure richly glorify Himself among us and in us, to the honor of His thrice Holy Name and to the salvation of us and our young people.

BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

As we study our Bibles, we will see that birds and animals and things of nature are often spoken of to teach us lessons and to picture for us parables spoken by the Lord Jesus. How often He referred to such things as seed, tares, fish, trees, and similar things of nature. Do we always understand the real meaning of them? We may also turn unto Him as the disciples did, and ask, “Lord, what does this mean?” or bow before Him in prayer with the poet, begging, “Teach me, O Lord, Thy way of truth.” Whether we are older or younger, we are all in need of this.

In the book of Psalms we also find birds, animals, and things of nature mentioned in a number of texts. This month we have a quiz taken entirely from the Psalms, using these texts. Since some will possibly finds this quiz rather difficult, I have given a hint for certain texts, indicating in which group of psalms the answer would be found. For example, (10-30) would show that you should look in the Psalms from 10 through 30. The first letters of the answers will spell out eight words found in Psalm 55. Study the texts carefully, and may the Lord give us hearts to understand them.

Again we have some letters to answer —

JANET KARDUX - The weather here is also very nice at present, Janet. Trees are starting to bud, the grass is beginning to turn green, the robins have returned, all signs that spring is again here. A faithful God fulfills His Word, and He must receive the honor.

DAVID ELSHOUT - It was real nice to hear from you, David, and to know that you are settled in your new home. Although you have found some friends there, I am sure you are still glad to hear from your friends in New Jersey.

How large is the school which you attend?

HEATHER JANSEN - Little children learn so much during the first few years, Heather. Looking back to six months before, you soon realize how many changes have taken place, and how much they now can do which couldn’t be done before. The prophet said, “Learn to do well,” and there he speaks to young and old.

MARIA DROOGENDYK - Do you enjoy typing, Maria? I am always glad that I learned to type while in high school, as it has been very useful throughout the years. There are certain things which we learn when in school, little realizing how useful they may prove to be in later years.

PHILLIP SCHOUTEN - Dogs and cats do not always get along together, do they, Phillip? But we also see this at times regarding boys and girls, and even husbands and wives. Do you know what instruction the Lord Jesus gave in the sermon on the mount about that which we should do to others?

FRANK KARDUX - What happened to the bus, Frank? Was anyone injured? An accident can happen so quickly. It makes us realize how much we need the Lord’s protection every moment of the day. In one of the psalters we sing, “In the home and by the way He will keep thee day by day.” Do you know which psalm that is?

STEVEN MEERDINK - I found Telkwa on the map, Steven. It is certainly quite far to the north of Chilliwack. Although it is so far from busy cities and probably has few people living there, yet the Lord sees us also in those far places. The psalmist said, “Whither shall I flee from His presence?”

ESTELLA SCHOUTEN - You certainly do not have many boys in your class, E stella. We have an aviation museum in Kalamazoo which also has some of those older planes. They are much different than the planes which we see today, aren’t they? Man has received wisdom in many areas of daily life.

JEANETTE DROOGENDYK -We are always glad to see new names added to the list, Jeanette. We hope that boys and girls will never forget what they have learned from their Bible study, and that it may be a real blessing for them to have done so.

SONYA DENBOER - Did you think the quiz was easy this time, Sonya? I am sure that even the older ones will sometimes have trouble finding the answer to certain questions. In one of His parables, the Lord Jesus said the seed of the sower was the Word of God. Do you know where it fell?

LINDA VANBRUGGE - Which subject do you like best in school, Linda? Some boys and girls probably like the easier subjects best, but I don’t think that is always true. It is good when we may enjoy the work we have to do, even though it is not always easy.

ANITA SCHOUTEN - It was good to hear that there is continual improvement and progress being made, Anita. The doctors have much wisdom, but they too must be given this wisdom by the Lord. He provides us with many natural blessings, but we are also dependent upon Him for all spiritual blessings.

Boys and girls, many thanks again for your replies to the quiz. We are always glad to hear from you and to see your answers return to us every month. We hope that it may be a sowing of good seed, and that the Lord Himself may prepare your hearts to receive it.

With love,

Your friend

“Uncle Garret”

AND HAST REVEALED THEM UNTO BABES

A person who was in Wiltshire about the latter end of the year 1813, heard a pleasing account of a little boy, who had recently died at a village near Trowbridge.

This morning I received your letter, respecting the dear little boy, who died in this village some time in the month of May, 1813. The whole of the account you have sent is correct, except that the mother of the late child was not a widow, but was living with her husband at the time the boy died. The woman and her husband were notoriously wicked, they paid no regard to the Sabbath, and every species of wickedness was committed with impunity. The woman had the poor boy in question, before she was married to her present husband; and they were also in very poor circumstances at the time the boy died. Although I had been constantly preaching in the village for nearly seven years, I never saw either of them at the meeting in my life. Indeed I did not know there were such people in the parish.

I relate all this, in order that you may have a clear understanding of the circumstance: the sequel of which will, I believe, be considered by you, a grand display of the free and rich grace and mercy of our good and gracious God, towards the vilest returning sinners. And, as I find you are disposed to publish this affair, I feel it my duty to give you the full statement of it, as it came under my own cognizance, being really concerned. I hope I feel thankful in my heart that you are stirred up to this: and may the Lord bless you in the work, and make it abundantly useful. As near as I can recollect, the matter was as follows: — One evening, some friends being at my house, in Christian conversation, a person knocked at the door. Opening it myself, I saw a tall bold-looking woman, in very mean attire. Upon inquiring what she wanted, she told me, she came to ask me to go with her, to see her boy, who had been ill some little time, and she believed would not live the night over; and he had been begging them to send for Mr. Dymott. At length she was obliged to come, for the boy would not be quiet, he wanted so much to see Mr. Dymott. I replied, “I do not know you, where do you live?” She answered, “About half a mile off.” “Why,” said I, “I never saw you at our place of worship.” “No Sir,” said she, “I never go anywhere on a ‘Sunday,’ I have no clothes fit to go out in.” Said I to her, “How does your boy know me?” “Why,” she said, “he has been in the habit of going to your meeting, whenever he could get away unobserved by me; for I did not let him every time be wanted to go, because he was so ragged, and had no shoes to wear; so that I was ashamed for him to go.” She seemed much affected when relating this. She proceeded to say, that when he could get off to a meeting on a Sabbath day, he would be talking about the text and the sermon, nearly all the week after (but you shall hear more of this in its proper place). Requesting one of my friends to accompany me, we set off about nine o’clock the same evening: when we got to the house, I heard him talk to the people with him, before I got upstairs. Upon some one saying as I entered the room, “Here is Mr. Dymott,” the poor child looked up, put out his hand, and taking mine in his, thus addressed me: “Oh! Mr. Dymott why had you not come before to me?” I replied, “I do not know anything of you nor of your wanting to see me.” “Ah no,” he replied, “I could not get my mother to come for you. But I am going to die, I am going to heaven, I am going to have a crown of life, and there is one prepared for you, and you and I shall be in heaven together. O! my dear Jesus, I want to come to heaven to you, I want to die this night.” As he addressed me by name, I asked him how he knew me. “O,” said he, “by going to hear you preach.” Upon asking him when he went, he replied “Every time I could, when my mother would let me.” I then enquired if he could remember anything he had heard me preach about. He answered, “Yes, that I can, I heard you preach from that text, ‘Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts, and let him return unto the LORD, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.” This was repeated correctly, though he could not read a word. All this while, he appeared as happy as it was possible for a creature to be, and at every interval in the conversation, he would keep on saying, with great earnestness, “O my dear Jesus, I want to die, to be out of this wicked world.” This he would repeat twenty times following, with his hands and eyes lifted to heaven, with as much propriety, gravity, and seriousness as though he had been forty years of age. I then asked him, if he would not be glad to get better and have good clothes, so that he might come to meeting on a Sabbath. “O no,” was the reply, “I want to die and get out of this wicked world.” I think I shall never forget the scene around me; the room was full of people, and everybody so affected, that all wept together. I then availed myself of the opportunity of addressing those that never went to a place of worship on the Lord’s Day. Every now and then, the boy would say, “Hark! Hark! I hear music, music, I hear music!” whilst he pointed upwards with his finger; so that it really seemed as though a part of heaven was let down into his soul, even while in the body; and when he could not hear the music, he would say to his mother, “I want to hear the music again;” and then, “Dear Jesus, I want to come to heaven to you.” Thus in the simplicity and out of the fulness of his heart he spake. I stayed an hour with him, and before I left, asked, if I should attempt to pray with him. “O yes.” After prayer, I took my leave, telling him I would see him again in the morning. Accordingly about six o’clock the next day I went again; but before I got there, his prayer had been answered; for he died about three o’clock in the morning, and I was informed, continued to the last in the same state I saw him in.

When he was dead, his mother requested he might be buried in our meeting yard; to which we consented.

On the day of his burial I preached from the words: “Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.” Astonishing to relate, we had people from five to six miles around us present at this time, and the concourse was so great that it was supposed hundreds went away, not being able to get near enough to the chapel to hear. This was the end of this dear child. I afterwards heard, from his mother and others, that he would get away Sabbath mornings, and not go back to get food, lest his mother should not permit him to go again. In this way he had stayed the three services of the day, when the snow was on the ground and he had no shoes to his feet and loitered about from the end of one to the beginning of the succeeding opportunity. But had this been known, he would not have fared thus.

I will now inform you a little what effect this had upon his then wicked mother. She, seeing the happy end of her child, began to reflect upon her hard and cruel treatment of him; which so wrought upon her mind, that she was like a distracted woman for many months, not capable of doing her labour. The Lord also gave her light to see her sin, as well as her ill usage of her child on account of his religion, the guilt of which so oppressed her, that she would lie down upon the ground and roll herself in agony, expecting every minute to be cut off and sent to destruction. She began immediately to attend the means of grace, not only on the Lord’s Day, but at our meetings of prayer. Her wicked oaths and wicked companions and conduct were immediately left, and her cry was, “God be merciful to me a sinner.” She acknowledged to me, that she often cursed the boy; for, after having been to meeting on a Sabbath, he would be talking to himself of what Mr. Dymott said — often repeating these words: “Let the wicked forsake his way,” etc. when his mother would curse him, and say, “Mind your work, you lazy blockhead: what do you know about the wicked forsaking his way?” and very often beat him into the bargain. But after his death, this language to and usage of her child, and all upon account of his religion, recurred to her recollection, striking like daggers into her conscience; and for a long season she went under great terrors of mind. But at length the Lord was pleased to speak peace to her soul, after which she became a member of our society, and I believe her to be now a woman of sterling piety; and though remarkably poor, yet she is an ornament to her profession; and as she was notorious for wickedness, so now she seems to be eminent for rich and sound experience as a Christian; and a more evident or extraordinary conversion I have never heard of. Nor did the matter end here; for, at the same time, this circumstance was blessed to the conversion of four or five of her wicked companions, who were reclaimed from the error of their ways.

“God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform.”

Thus I have given you as correct a statement of this affair as I am capable of, all which I was ear and eye-witness to.

William Salisbury

DONE WRONG

Where do you live? In a house, of course. That is true. Adam and Eve also received a place to live. It was in paradise.

What did they do there? They did all the choicest things. They cared for the trees, flowers and animals. Adam gave all the animals names. The Lord had made him so wise. He is not afraid. All the animals are harmless. Adam and Eve are never tired and never sick. They love the Lord. And they love each other. They are never angry. Surely, the Lord had made everything very good. For that reason it is so glorious. For everything they say, “Lord, we thank Thee.”

Do they have good? Oh yes. They may eat of all the fruits that grow in the garden. They are delicious! The animals also have enough to eat. Sometimes the Lord comes to speak with Adam and Eve. Just as a father talks with his children, the Lord talks with Adam and Eve.

In the middle of the garden is a tree with a special name. It is the Tree of Life. The Lord said, “Whenever you look at that tree, you know that you have received life from Me. If you always remain obedient, you may live. You are able to do that, Adam and Eve.”

There is also another tree in paradise with a special name. It is the Tree of Good and Evil. The Lord said, “You may not eat of this tree. Be careful! If you still do it, you will lose something. Then you shall no longer have My image. Then you lose life. And,. then you must go out of paradise.

Isn’t that too difficult for Adam and Eve? No. They are made so well that they are able to choose. They do not have to eat of that one tree.

Once Eve took a walk through the garden. Listen! All at once she heard a voice. It was not Adam. It was not the Lord. The voice came from an animal. It came from a serpent. There was someone inside of it. How could that be? Was that really so? Yes. Something terrible had taken place in heaven.

A lot of angels had been disobedient. They had not listened to the Lord. The evil angels had been cast out of heaven. Now they are not angels anymore. They are fighters against the Lord. How terrible! they received another name. They are called devils. Such a devil is within the serpent. He speaks. He says to Eve: “May you not eat anything?” “Oh yes,” says Eve, “it is only from one tree that we may not eat. If we do that, we shall lose our life. Then we shall die.”

“Not true,” says the devil, “go ahead and eat. I am certain that you will not die. If you do eat, you shall become just as wise as the Lord. Go ahead. You may do it.”

No, do not do that, Eve. It is a lie.

Yes, the devil is a great liar. Don’t listen to him, Eve. Eve thinks, “If I eat of that tree, will I then become just as wise as the Lord?” She would like to be as God. But that may and can not be. There is but one God. You must listen to Him.

What does she do now? She picks and eats. And.…she also gives a fruit to Adam and he also eats. Terrible! They have listened to the Liar. The devil laughed. He desired to ruin everything belonging to the Lord. He thought, now I have really trapped them.

The Lord has seen everything. What do Adam and Eve do? They are frightened. They look at each other. Oh, they have no clothes on. At first they had found this very normal. After they disobeyed, it seemed very strange to them. They quickly made clothes from leaves. And then they creep away. They are afraid of the Lord. And it is their own fault.

The Lord comes and calls: “Where are you?”

There come Adam and Eve. Adam says, “I crept away because I was naked.” “How do you know that?” says the Lord. “Have you eaten of the tree?” The Lord knows. But Adam and Eve must admit it. Adam blames Eve. And Eve blames the serpent.

“You have been disobedient,” says the Lord. “Do you know what you have done? You have sinned. That has never happened before. Now you no longer have My image. You have listened to the father of lies, the devil. Now you belong to him. You have done wrong. You should not have listened. You should have been obedient. Now the liar has taken you captive. I must cast you away.”

How sad! Can this never be restored? Does the Lord never want to be the Father of Adam and Eve again?

Or, shall there yet be someone who can free Adam and Eve again? Shall there yet come good? You will read about this next time, D.V. -R.Q. (Doven-Contact)
