THE NETHERLANDS REFORMED CHURCH AT ALBERNI, VANCOUVER IS.

Having received some photos of the Netherlands Reformed Church at Alberni, we are herewith placing the same together with a brief account, which gives our readers a little more information about this congregation and their new church.

In the month of April, 1956 some people gathered together on the Lord’s Day in the home of Mrs. A. Sanders. There were four families. The following July they rented a hall for their services, which they used until January, 1959. They then rented a small church belonging to the Reformed Church of America. These people had only one service a day. In September, 1960 some ground was purchased for their own church. The only contracts let out were for the basement forms, wiring, and brick laying. All the other work was done by the members.

The first service in the new church took place the Sunday before Christmas, 1961. The dedication service was held on February 27, 1962, and was conducted by the Rev. M. Romeyn. The minister spoke at that occasion about Psalm 87. His theme was, “The Church.” He spoke.

1. About the foundation.

2. About the preaching.

3. About the members.

The service was in the Holland language.

The seating capacity of the church is 153, in future 185, and if necessary 207 will be placed. The consistory room is in the basement, also restrooms, a small kitchen, and seats for holding meetings and catechism classes. The men are still working to finish the basement and a parking lot.

The congregation at Alberni is still a branch of the congregation at Chilliwack. Rev. Romeyn usually serves the congregation three or four times a year. It takes about six hours of traveling from Chilliwack to Alberni, the greatest part thereof by water. Alberni is a town on Vancouver Island. It is not known when the congregation will be instituted. Two brothers lead the services, and two brothers act as deacons for the time being. All the services are conducted in the Holland language, except two per month which are in English as well as the catechism classes. Presently there are 37 members and 49 baptized members.

Many thanks to all those who have given donations for these people so far away on an island in the Pacific.

“Within thy walls let peace abide,
And gladness with thy children dwell.”

—Psalm 122
