BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
When the Lord Jesus was upon the earth, He welcomed those parents who brought their children unto Him, and He rebuked the disciples for turning them away. He also set a child in the midst of the disciples as an example for them. Years later we find that the apostle Paul also showed much concern for children, not only directing his words to them, but also instructing the parents in regard to them.
The same can be said of Solomon, for in his writings, especially in the book of Proverbs, he seeks to guide young people in their lives. However, whether we are young or old, we find that guidance is needed. The poet had to confess, “I am prone to halt and stumble,” and we know that he was not writing this as a young person. We also know that all these writings were written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, for we read in the second epistle of Peter, “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
At this time of the year when many are traveling to visit parents, relatives, and friends, it is very helpful to have good maps and directions. Tourist information is usually available at rest areas to supply travelers with the assistance they need in regard to the best routes, and they are often informed where they can expect delays because of road construction or traffic problems. When we realize that everyone is traveling through this life, what a blessing it then is that God's Word provides us with good directions regarding what we need in our journey.
There are no doubt travelers throughout the country who think they need no directions or perhaps even disregard the directions they receive, but later regret this because they find themselves lost in strange places where they had not intended to be. Is this not also true with God's Word? There are those who have no desire for its guidance and therefore never read it, but there are also those who have been brought up with it in their homes and still shun or neglect the instruction it gives them.
The quiz this month centers on instruction given us, and the first letters of the answers will spell out seven words found in the sixth chapter of Paul's epistle to the Ephesians. These words give us the reason why it is so necessary to walk in the way which our parents and God's Word set before us.
Paul wrote to the Colossians, “Children, obey your parents in all _?_: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.”
Solomon said to young people, “_?_ unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.”
To the Thessalonians, Paul wrote, “_?_ from all appearance of evil.”
He also wrote to them, “Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the _?_ which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.”
In Matthew 25, the King shall say unto them on His right hand, “_?_ as ye have done it unto one of the least of these My brethren, ye have done it unto Me.”
In the sermon on the mount, the Lord Jesus said, “Lay not up for yourselves _?_ upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal.”
In the psalms we read, “Both young men, and _?_; old men, and children: let them praise the name of the LORD: for His name alone is excellent; His glory is above the earth and heaven.”
Solomon said to all of us, “In all thy ways _?_ Him, and He shall direct thy paths.”
Paul wrote to Timothy, “Flee also _?_ lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”
In Deuteronomy, Moses said to the people, “Then _?_ lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.”
The Lord Jesus also said, “ _?_ ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat.”
Paul wrote to the Ephesians, “I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk _?_ of the vocation wherewith ye are called.”
In the book of Hebrews we read, “How shall we _?_, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord.”
When stopped on his way to Damascus, Saul of Tarsus asked, “_?_, what wilt Thou have me to do?”
In one of his epistles, John wrote, “_?_ not the world, neither the things that are in the world.”
In Ecclesiastes, Solomon wrote, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments: for this is the _?_ duty of man.”
Solomon also wrote, “My son, hear the _?_ of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother.”
In a well-known psalm, we read, “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise: be _?_ unto Him, and bless His Name.”
In one of the psalms, the question is asked, “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way?” and the answer given is, “by taking _?_ thereto according to Thy Word.”
The Lord Jesus also said, “Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a _?_ before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men.”
James wrote, “_?_ yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up.”
Peter wrote, “Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the ? of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.”
James also wrote, “Speak not ? one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law.”

Again there are letters to answer —
ALISE VANDE BRUINHORST - You saw quite a few animals in the national park, Alise. Sometimes they seem to remain hidden in the woods, especially the bears. We read quite a few times about lions and bears in Bible times. David told King Saul how the Lord had enabled him to fight with these animals in order to protect his father's sheep. Perhaps you can think of other biblical examples.
RYAN SLINGERLAND - You seem to have a thriving egg business, Ryan. Do you have customers to whom you deliver your eggs, or do you just sell them from your home? Do you feed the chickens before you go to school in the morning? The word “chickens” appears only once in the Bible. Do you know where it is found? Yes, many of the boys and girls who once answered the quiz are now parents and have children who do so.
ILSE NEELS - Yes, Ilse, I spoke with your teacher when she was in Michigan. We hope your grandparents arrived safely. They were probably just as anxious to see you as you were to see them. Do you speak Dutch to them, or do they know English? It is not possible to send brownies through the fax machine, but you can at least use it to tell us how good they were.
CHRISTINEKE VERHOEF - We heard you had some visitors from Michigan this week, Christineke. I hope you didn't spoil them. Or don't babies get spoiled with too much attention? When you have not seen them for a month or two, then it is surprising how much they change in a short time. Time does not stand still, and of all of us it must be said as Moses wrote, “We spend our years as a tale that is told.”
JESSICA HOWE - What kind of fish do you have in your pond, Jessica? Spring is a beautiful time of the year, since everything is fresh and green. But all this can change so quickly. In the psalter we sing how the grass green in the morning is withered ere the close of day. That is why Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes, “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth.”
MARY-ANNE EVERS - It sounds as if you will be a good cook, Mary-Anne. At least, your menu sounded like something delicious. Did it turn out well? Did you know that we also read about cooks in the Bible? Perhaps you can find where they are mentioned. It is a blessing if we may have an appetite for food. Sometimes we visit people who have no desire to eat, even though the food is well-prepared and looks delicious.
WILLIAM SPORTE-We thought we would answer your letter here, William. It seems you had lots of nice presents for your birthday. What kinds of seeds were they that you are planting? In the Bible we are told that we can plant and we can water, but one thing more is needed. Do you know what that is? That is more important than everything that we can do.
ANDREW DE VISSER- Did your aunt and uncle and cousins enjoy their visit in Canada, Andrew? When visiting another country, we always find many new and interesting things, things which we do not see every day. If I recall correctly, the motto of our state is, “If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you.” It means that where we are there are many wonderful things to be seen, but too often we do not notice them.
VANESSA KOPPELAAR - It was good to hear that you enjoy the Bible quizzes, Vanessa. That helps us enjoy making them. However, the main thing is that we might learn to know our Bibles well, for it is God's Word to us. There were many times throughout the Bible that the message was brought to the people by God's servants, saying, “Hear ye the Word of the Lord.” Possibly you can find some of them.
SARAH-JANE DE IONGE - That was surprising that you heard the answer in the church service for the question you couldn't find, Sarah-Jane. We know that every word that is spoken is important, but we are shown how important it then is to listen closely. I am sure you know what the centurion said to the Lord Jesus when he came to ask Him to heal his servant.
CONNOR DE MEESTER - Are you going to keep all those puppies, Connor? Do you already have names for them? Names are important for people, but dogs also need to have a name. Especially in Bible times, children were often given names having special meanings. We even read that there were occasions when the Lord Himself gave the parents the name for their child. Can you think of an example?
EMILY EVERS - We realize that some quizzes are easier than others, Emily, but we like to make you work at them. If everything at school were easy, you would not learn to study, and that is also true with the Bible quiz. Do you help take care of your baby sister? When your mother is busy with the family, I am sure there are many things which you can do to help. Did your father arrive home safely?
JOHANNA DE VISSER - Have you ever been up in an airplane, Johanna? It is really amazing that such large machines can fly through the air at tremendous speeds. We can only say as one inventor said many years ago, “What hath God wrought!” He was quoting from the Bible, but do you know who in the Bible spoke these words? How did you do on your year-end tests?
CISKA BOER - We are quite well, Ciska. You wrote that your little brother broke something, but a word was missing, so we did not know what it was. How is your
garden growing? We have had a rather cool spring, so I think the growing season has been delayed. Several of the letters I have received have said, “My grandparents are coming,” so I am wondering whether they all refer to the same grandparents.
TEUNIS VAN DE WEETERING - When it comes to speaking Dutch, I don't do so well, Teunis, but if you don't talk too fast, I can understand you. It is nice to know some Dutch, as there certainly are many times when it can be put to good use, even when we live on this side of the ocean. Do you still have quite a few relatives in the Netherlands?
We read in the Bible that Paul also spoke more than one language.
Many thanks to all of you, boys and girls, for your replies to the quiz. It is often told us how precious the Word of God was in days gone by when Bibles were scarce, but we hope that also today it may be a precious Book for young and old. The poet said, “It is my daily meditation,” and may it be this for us also.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
